It is not an exact match. Hitler was not born poor, but his family’s economic status was not even close to that of Donald Trump. Yet the two do share a drive not so much for personal wealth as to dominate and lead their countries in unprecedented, revolutionary ways that will make them dominant players on the world stage of their respective times. Moreover, their performance is quite similar in that they do not honor the rule of law but rather the rule of winning no matter the cost. Trump will only be satisfied when he dominates the scene in every way come hell or high water ala Hitler. A strategy by which the American people can deal with Trump is essentially the same strategy they used on Hitler about 85 years ago. Trump has to go, preferably by the ballot box, but by impeachment or firing squad if necessary. When asked what the Continental Congress had achieved in its session of 1787, Benjamin Franklin replied: “A republic if you can keep it.” And so it has been a constitutional representative Republic while usually calling itself a democracy for 236 years. To remain a republic that calls itself a democracy while avoiding a Nazi -like dictatorship, America must recognize the certain danger of Trump becoming a latter day Hitler and take all caution to prevent such. Interestingly, Hitler was an honest fellow in his own way. He told the Germans what he wanted, what he thought would be good for them, and how he wanted to achieve his objectives. No one should have had the least doubt about where Hitler was going and how. By the same token, no one should be at all in doubt about where Trump is going and how. “A republic if you can keep it” was Ben Franklin’s famous reply when asked what the Continental Congress had accomplished as it adjourned on July 4, 1776. One may ask a similar question of accomplishment of the present Congress. What will it achieve in its present session to better the future of the American people and to prevent the rise of a new Hitler in the form of Trump in what appears to be an increasingly challenging and uncertain era? We must not underestimate Trump as the German Reichstag underestimated Hitler, especially since Trump is already head of State whereas Hitler was only elected Prime Minister under the Head of State Paul von Hindenburg. There must be meaningful checks on Trump as he moves to become the Hitler of our time. The Supreme Court and the Congress must be fully aware of the risks and move to prevent Trump from becoming a modern Hitler. The time for action is now.
